How to: make an Anthropologie-style singlet

anthro_singlet.jpgThe good folks at fashion favourite Anthropologie have some stunning tops and tees on offer which is great if you're flush but not so great if you're saving the pennies.

Crafter Stephanie, also known as The Crimson Owl, fell in love with a singlet online and by the time she got around to buying it it was nowhere to be found. Lucky for her, and for us, she's a dab hand with fabric, scissors and a bit of heat-activated bonding.

Her tutorial for how to create your own Anthro Knock-Off singlet takes you from plain vest-top to something 'Anthropological' in a few easy steps with some lovely photography work to boot.

Check out her other fabulously clear and concise tutorials too.

How to: Make a fab fabric apple appliqué

apple-applique.jpgWe're still celebrating all things Autumnal and harvest-related here at Crafty Crafty, and this juicy-looking apple-iqué piece caught my eye earlier today as a great seasonal project.

It's by Wee Folk Art, and the pattern allows you to make your apple as tiny or gigantic as you wish. The easy-to-follow pattern can be found here and I think this would look too cute sewn on to a child's pair of jeans or plush toy. But if you're lucky enough to have a real crop of apples in the garden, you might want to go one better and turn them into a delicious dessert: check out the Beeb's 'proper apple pie' recipe for the best sort.

How to: make party loot bags for grown-ups

cocktail-applique.JPGI know I usually celebrate the oncoming weekend with a cocktail recipe, but I'm feeling like a break from the booze this weekend. Instead, here's a lovely pattern for a simple drawstring bag, decorated with a cocktail applique design that's dead simple to make.

I think these would make fantastic grown-up 'party loot' bags: the cocktail motif gives it a kitsch look and you can use whatever colours you want to mix your 'drink' - let's face it, real cocktails come in every shade of the spectrum, so let your imagination run riot! You might want to include some sequins and beads, too.

Full tutorial here.

Liven up your raincoat because it looks like you'll be needing it

RainCoatCustomized1.jpgEven though that sneaky sun is back out now, Abi and I were pelted with rain this morning as we ran from the tube to Shiny Towers. Which just goes to show, you can't trust British weather. Ever.

If I only I'd had this earlier. Vickie Howell customized her raincoat with these appliqué embellishments made from oilcloth. There's a distinct rain theme going on here, but obviously you could design whatever you like!

Go here for an easy step by step tutorial.

How to: appliqué your name on to anything

letter-applique.jpgAppliqué is one of those crafts that tends to get overlooked by its more mainstream cousins, but it's also a very effective, and often satisfyingly simple craft to perfect. You can appliqué anything from paper to clothes and accessories, making them so much more personal and fun -- and it doesn't get much more personal than spelling out your own name.

This Mama Makes Stuff has a cool tutorial here on how to sew beautiful lettering on to anything from towels to t-shirts. Once you've got the technique right, who knows what words you might soon be wearing on your chest?

How to create a unique reverse-applique Tote Bag

RA_tote_finished_lg.jpgEmily Tan writes: We're all familiar with applique, but what about reverse applique? This technique involves layer several fabrics in different patterns and then cutting away the design to reveal the fabrics beneath. Diane Gillelund on Craftylish swears its easy and has created this beautiful summery tote to prove it to you.

For great detailed instructions, with gorgeous step-by-step images on how to make one for yourself, click on over here.
