Mysterious adventures in fibre

nishio.jpgI came across this little fibre-obsessed website while trawling Twitter for crafty gold the other day. It's a little virtual window on textile and print.

Spacial Loophole are on a mission to showcase the wonders that they find in the world of textiles and share them with you, the unwary internet wanderer. They show a selection of interesting textile prints/patterns in a personal stratagem to keep the author to the site informed and organized. This in turn keep you informed and organised without having to do any searching yourself.

The poster's goal is "A post everyday with no, no exceptions until a female president is elected in my motherland". There are posts he/she finds in real life such as a rather marvellous bed cover in her/his parent's attic to life-size trains made from castaway fabric in Nairobi.

I'm not entirely sure where the motherland or how likely their female presidenthood is but it's a fine blog and I hope it keeps going.

Say farewell to LOST with a little LOST craft

4320373223_ab8bc8c759.jpgLosties everywhere a probably feeling a bit lost themselves as we spent our last two and a half hours on the golden sands of LOST's bizarre, smoke-monster infested island only a handful of hours ago. Yes folks there are no more Dharma-initiative rations left in the larder. It's all over.

There are two ways to console yourself. The first is locking yourself in a room with a DVD player, the entire LOST box set and a pile of pizza menus. The other is to express your love for LOST the best way we know how: through the medium of cathartic craft.

Need ideas? I've hunted down a few island craft treasures that are almost as crafty as Ben Linus. Almost.

Check out this selection of LOST cupcakes from Craftster's Nice Going Sink your teeth into Sawyer. Yum.

Wipe your tears with this Dharma Dishcloth pattern.

Keep your fingers toasty while your beer stays as cool as Jack in a crisis with this Dharma Beer Coozy. The page also includes a recipe for Fish Biscuits if you fancy re-enacting Sawyer and Kate's bear cage meals.

Re-enact those final fateful scenes by becoming our own Jacob and ordering about your own set of embroidered island dwellers.

And finally check out DIY Life's bevvy of crafty Lost-ness with more examples of LOST craft than Sawyer has nicknames for people.

I'm off to weep into my Dharma hankie now while wailing the lyrics to Drive Shaft's number one single. Namaste, fellow lost Losties. And remember, live together, die alone.

Knit yourself a feline friend

Cats1.jpgWriter and illustrator Viviane Schwarz is a maker of fabulous things.

Her books are full of stories of mad moggies, smiley sharks and marvellously strong mice.

Not content with the papery and pen world Viv also makes craftier beasts and she invites you to make them too.

If you pootle over to the storybook world that is Viviane's website you are tempted in with crafty options of knitting a trio of cats, making mayhem with a cat collage or stitching yourself a fabulous range of sock beasties.

The cats themselves scramble right out of the pages of There are Cats in This Book and can appear on your knitting needles in three feline sizes from tiny to tall.

Check out the Letters from Schwarzville blog too for a peek into a crafty, creative and cat-filled life.

Including some of the most kooky-cool dresses ever. The Moomin dress in particular is all kinds of fabulous.

Save the Guerrilla on Etsy

guerrilla.jpgWith Banksy's Exit Through the Gift Shop film giving people a friendly shove in the direction of the subversive Etsy's AmityUK takes a look at Guerilla Craft this week.

To begin with there's a look at what's going on in graffiti knitting. From the bollard blanketing beginnings of Knitta to the sinister installation of Knit the City.

From there Amity wanders into a world of guerilla gardening changing cities and slow-motion gunfighting flash mobs.

Most interesting of all is a look at the movement of some artists to selling their street art on Etsy in the form of prints, woodcuts and gear.

An education in sneaky art and craft from sellers of handmade magic.

Crafty Art: wired, weird and wonderful

bentobjects.jpgStab a ball of yarn with your knitting needles and you're not likely to feel any guilt at all. Stick a little pair of arms and a skinny pair of legs on said ball of yarn and suddenly you're feeling all guilty and murderous.

Welcome to the world of Bent Objects. Artist Terry Border turns every day objects into slightly disturbing people. Starting with the blood-weeping ball of yarn, we trawl the Bent Objects site to find zombie peanuts, the painfully punny Sir Lawrence Olivey-Eye and a plethora of wire-limbed weirdness you'll either love or run screaming from.

I'm quite thankful I don't know Mr Border in real life. You'd live in constant fear of him suddenly giving life to your lunch or animating your office stapler. You may never get the chance to make use of an inanimate object without guilt again.

Dollshouse craft: tiny, eerie and crafty

callsmall.jpgTiny versions of every day things are always fascinating, so it makes sense that an entire tiny house full of tiny things would be a must-see. The Call of the Small site doesn't disappoint.

Created by blogger Callsmall, the tiny worlds on Call of the Small are a wonder to behold. There are teeny tiny versions of everything from a crafty table complete with scissors, glue and a sticky tape dispenser to the utterly awesome tiny cut out wood scene in the Curator post, made by Daspuppenhaus.

Many of the items are bought rather than crafted (though they must have been crafted by someone) but the craft here is how Callsmall sets it all out and adds extra touches. Aquarium plants, Japanese erasers, origami paper, beads; all feature in her minuscule creations. Her houses are tiny worlds of crafty beauty.

Total miniature craft genius.

Craft ouch! A craft-inspired tattoo

robotattoo.jpgThe folks over at the crafty and delightful Miso Funky, a craft website and shop whose mission it is to produce "handmade things to funkify your life", have many dedicated followers as they continue on their mission to seek out funky craft. Some more dedicated than others.

An Argentinian fan of theirs has had their cute little cross-stitch robot mascots tattooed onto her robot-adoring skin.

The fan sent along a picture of the tattoos and explained that the robots symbolised a bit more than her love of the crafty robots, which is a bit of a relief.

You can see the explanation she sent to Miso Funky along with the picture on their blog and check out their funky craft stuff while you're there.

Makes me wonder what other crafty tributes there are out there lurking unseen. I'm almost afraid to ask.
