Lost Boys Vampire cookies

haimcookie.jpgA generation of vampire film fans were saddened by the death of The Lost Boys star Corey Haim this week. Corey was a vampire-battling film icon long before the sparkly skin of Edward Cullen or the Southern fanged twang of Bill Compton came out of the coffin.

It's been pretty tough to hunt down a craft tribute to The Lost Boys. The world of vampire-based craft seems overwhelmed by the more recent undead and their hunters.

I did manage to track down some finely-fanged Lost Boys cookies at long last. Crafting with Cat Hair put together a batch of suitably bloody biscuits in honour of a film that made the words "Death by stereo" a phrase every vampire feared.

So here's to Corey and the hours of silver screen swooning he caused on the Lost Boys generation. You will be missed.

How to: make your own taffy

HomemadeTaffy1.jpgThe Winter Olympics are over and you're feeling a bit empty. Sod the diet. Fancy something so sticky and sweet it'll stick your teeth together for the foreseeable future? Then why not have a go at making your own taffy?

Taffy is a type of chewy candy which is made by stretching or pulling a sticky glob of boiled sugar, butter or vegetable oil, flavourings, and colouring until fluffy and sweetlike. According to my sweet-toothed informant a poor UK equivalent would be Starburst or Chewits but there's nothing over here like the real thing.

You can make your own taffy with the recipe on Skip to My Lou's blog.

You can also have a gander at how to make your own Maple Taffy if you're snowbound and happen to have some syrup lying around. Keeping that little bit of Canada in your lives even after the skating and skiing is over.

Just remember to brush your teeth afterwards.

How to: make cinnamon maple pecans

roastednuts.jpgThere are probably about eight billion things that we should be eating every day. According to various scientific/government/nutritional findings we should probably just give up our jobs and sit at a table chewing our way through our five a day, our handfuls of seeds, our fish oils and our fibres. It's all a bit nuts really. Are cinnamon maple pecans on the list? Who cares. They're yummy.

The cinnamon maple pecan recipe on Craftzine does involve a bit of butter and a fair amount of tasty maple syrup. Surely those can be overlooked when they're not really the main ingredients. It's all about getting those important healthy elements into your diet, right?

If the 'what not to eat' army do come around shaking their heads you can always give them a few to try. You're very likely to convert them to the 'what's nice to eat' side of the force.

Fluffy cupcakes that won't make you fat

fuzzyfeltedcupcakes.jpgThere's rather a lot of putting down the cake and picking up the carrot around the new year. I'm sure cakes, our friends through times both bad and good, feel rather neglected by the whole thing. It's not that cakes are bad, it's just that they're crammed full of sugary fat stuff. It isn't their fault.

So in tribute to the wonder that is the cake I've found some fluffy felted cupcakes to bring cake back into your life.

In a whirl of felt roving, wooden candle sticks and yarn these squidgy sweet felted cupcakes and their display stand can be yours. To remind you of the days when you weren't so worried about stuffing cake into your face without actually tempting you with sugary badness. Hooray for SpottedCanary, their maker.

Celebrate your crafty prowess after you've made them with a huge slice of victoria sponge. Go on.

Food Craft: Lady Gaga gingerbread ladies

lady-gaga-gingerbreads.jpgSay what you like about Lady Gaga, but I can think of few celebs that would provide a better source of inspiration for crafters looking to have a bit of fun with colour!

Bitch Wants Tea spotted these 'Lady Gaga Gingerbreads', which celebrate Ms. Gaga's eclectic wardrobe in colourful fondant, with each biscuit representing a real-life outfit from the kooky star.

Fantastic baking skills, whoever made it, and the resemblance in some cases is uncanny. That said, how did Keith Flint from the Prodigy manage to make it into the front row!?

Food Craft: Nike 'Shoeburger'

nike-shoeburger.jpgYup, it's a bit grim, and you certainly wouldn't want to leave this one hanging around in the studio for too long. But you can't deny the talent that's gone into creating this Nike Air Max trainer using only the ingredients of another classic American symbol: the hamburger. It's the work of Olle Hemmendorff, one of a group of creatives briefed with interpreting 8 different Nike Sportswear icons.

Friday Cocktail: Candy Cane Cocktail

candycane_l.jpgChristmas is a time for getting a bit sozzled and quite frankly why not when you've been crafting so hard all year? It's time to kick off your pointy jingle-toed shoes, put on a bit of Bing and shake yourself up a festive Candy Cane Cocktail to keep your Christmas spirits up.

The cocktail features a sweet rim which is encrusted with crushed candy cane to set the drink off, and is full of Christmas spirit in the form of sweet strawberry vodka and creme de menthe. Topped off with a candy cane on the rim of the glass it's so Christmassy sweet it almost makes my teeth ache to look at it.

This festive tipple can be found on the site of homemaking queen Martha Stewart, who is guided through the recipe by the barman at the infamous Four Seasons Hotel. There's also a video along with the recipe so you can watch it being made by the master.

A sweet sip to knock up while you wait for the turkey to cook.
