Some of us are far too busy for bandying about town searching for something shiny to say I love you. There's crafting to be done and no time to do it in. Which is why this super-quick how to for a felted heart necklace is perfect for a quick but cute valentine's crafting.
The free Heart-Felt Necklace pattern is simple: a quickly knit square of pure wool which is felted, cut and strung on a necklace with a heart-shaped charm. There's a free PDF with a heart-shaped template for your cut out and a handy link to some rather lovely MODA DEA "Bamboo Wool" in a kicky chilli pepper red to make things even easier.
A cute little pendant in less time than it takes you to fight the crowds in the bustling shops to buy something half as nice.
Did you start a huge project for your beloved way back in '09 that hasn't quite reached the final stages? Or have you just failed to make (or buy) anything yet and are beginning to panic?
Fear not, as embroidery is one of the quickest, yet most effective, ways to whip up a special present for a special person. In many ways, the simpler the pattern the more effective if will look, and I think this Valentine's pattern by Andrea Zuill is a great example. You don't really need a pattern as such: just imitate what she's done here or make your own variant with a message of your choice. But her full tutorial can be found here.
Brie and Cranberries are not only one of the nicest festive food combos for Christmas - they're one of the nicest taste sensations of all time, so I tend to stock up on the runny stuff around this time of year.
While I was shopping for some deliciously ripe brie this weekend, I came across this rather wonderful idea for making the cheese even more seasonal: chop off a few edges in a classic brie triangle, et voila: you've got a brie Christmas tree. Possibly the quickest food craft 'project' I've ever encountered, but I couldn't resist including it here as it's not something I'd necessarily have thought of. Joyeux noel!
Crafters are such magpies that I have to assume that most of us have a few button-badges stashed away somewhere -- either home-made or plucked from jumble sales, events and our own childhood collections. It seems a shame to keep them all in a drawer, so here's a video showing fun way to display badges using an old craft staple: the embroidery hoop. With the right fabric, this can make excellent, instant home decor, too. We chat about it in our latest video here.
Father's Day is fast approaching - it's this Sunday (the 21st) guys! If you're looking for a card that's a little bit different, you might like these handmade shirt cards made by Southern Bliss.
You can buy them from her Etsy shop, but why not impress your Dad by making it yourself? It would be so easy, and all you'd need is some card stock and buttons.
Inspired by the sunshine in London this week, I got busy with some scissors, glue and fabric scraps to make some fun flowers you can use to decorate almost anything. They're quick to make, easy enough for kids to make and very versatile - see the video below for instructions!
I still take a certain childish glee in discovering techniques that are so much easier to get right than they look, and this is a good example: the 'petals' on these eye-popping flower embellishments are pre-made pom-poms (the sort you can buy at the craft store for next to nothing) arranged in the right way to give a felted, floral effect and finished with a well place twist of yarn. Genius! Trust Hannah to come up with an idea like that...
